Amy Adams to Play Lois Lane in Superman Reboot

amy-adams-2011-SAG-AwardsIf you haven’t already heard, news has been traveling faster than a speeding bullet – Amy Adams has been cast as Lois Lane. She’ll play the intrepid reporter at the Daily Planet and romantic interest opposite Henry Cavill, playing Clark Kent / Superman. She joins Diane Lane and Kevin Costner who’ve been cast as Clark’s adoptive parents,  Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Zack Snyder was in Paris promoting his new film Sucker Punch when he called the 36-year-old star to give her the news that she had made the cut.

There’s was plenty of interest from today’s top young actresses for the role and speaking with Hero Complex, Snyder clued us in on his casting decision:

There was a big, giant search for Lois… For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role. We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.

While Snyder’s latest film has been described as a roller-coaster on many levels that’s an over dose of eye candy, it has drawn early criticism with some fans concerned that the newest Superman could be off to a shaky start. Though with Christopher Nolan shepherding the project, he’ll be overseeing the tone of the reboot which is said to be taking the approach that ‘Batman Begins’ took.

While we know Snyder won’t be able to resist flashy visuals, he recently said that he plans for the Superman reboot to be a more realistic character portrayal; re-introduced in a modern context.

zack-snyder_directorI think the visual style of “Superman,” though I can’t say for certain as it’s early, but I kind of feel like — and I did say to the studio – that what’s cool for me and interesting, and odd, is that “Superman” is probably going to be the most realistic movie I’ve ever made. It’s kind of fun that the most realistic movie I probably will make is a movie called “Superman.” Which shows how crazy my other movies are. Because I guess for him to be credible… He gets more credible by the reality that you can bring to him, you know emotionally, and visually, I think.

As for the casting of Amy Adams, Snyder declined to reveal any plot details but said the role is “a linchpin” to the project and that the classic character would be updated with contemporary ‘appeal and spirit’.

It goes back to what I’ve said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. What’s important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today’s audience so that we understand the decisions he makes.  That applies to Lois as well. She has to be in the same universe as him [in tone and substance].

Adams recently scored an Oscar nomination for her work in David O. Russell‘s ‘The Fighter’ playing a feisty bartender who wants the best for her Boxer Bo’, and she can seen next in the new Disney Muppets film along with Jason Segel.

The Superman reboot is set to open December 2012.
