Since the release of the first trailer for Apollo 18, there’s been plenty of excitement for the newest found-footage genre flick that documents the ‘final’ ill-fated moon landing. While Apollo 17 was the last manned mission to the moon that launched December 17th 1972 – the film suggests that a year later two more American astronauts went on a secret mission funded by the US Department of Defense. The footage was supposedly discovered when film-maker Timur Bekmambetov was hired to make a documentary about the Russian Space station and found the footage in the space film archives.
All up it looks great, conceptually innovative and a unique setting for this popular genre – and while the rules are that almost no-one ever survives and we’ll likely never have a clear picture of the ‘bad guy’ – it should be a creepy theatregoing experience.
Word is though that due to the initial trailer revealing too much of the plot, the film was re-edited to salvage the project, and could be to the film’s detriment and differ considerably from the intended vision. It was set to be released in April though was pushed back to September so we’ll have to see if the extra time has been to the film’s benefit.
From the Weinstein Company, it was written by Brian Miller and directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego, Timur Bekmambetov is onboard as a producer.
Apollo 18 touches down September 2nd, 2011.
