Bill Murray Nixes GHOSTBUSTERS 3

The chances of of seeing a new Ghostbusters movie has now all but faded, with word that Bill Murray has effectively passed on the project, unhappy with the script and unwilling to re-unite with his former co-stars for an unnecessary sequel.

While back in 2010 there was hope that filming might be underway by mid-2011, Murray conveyed dissatisfaction with the script being written by The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky after their film Year One bombed with audiences.

Now Dan Aykroyd in an interview with the Telegraph, discussed Murray’s unwillingness to reprise his role:

At this point it’s in suspended animation. The studio, the director Ivan Reitmanand [co-star] Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie. He doesn’t want to be involved.

[Murray’s] got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He’s into this life and living it. I know we’d have a lot of fun [but] I can’t be mad at him. He’s a friend first, a colleague second. We have a deep personal relationship that transcends business and he doesn’t want to know.

For fans who were looking forward to seeing the gang picking up their proton packs once more, Aykroyd discussed the possibly of moving ahead without Murray’s involvement:

We’re not going to do a movie that exploits the franchise. The script has to be perfect. I’m the cheerleader, but I’m only one voice in the matter. It’s a surety that Bill Murray will not do the movie, however there is still interest from the studio.

When Bill Murray appeared on stage for the 2010 Scream Awards in full Ghostbusters garb, many assumed this was a sign he was on-board for the new movie – perhaps if Dan Aykroyd rewrites the script, excising all of what Eisenberg and Stupnitsky contributed, this might be enough to lure the reluctant acting genius back one last time. For now – consider any sequel dead and unlikely to be revived.
