When Sylvester Stallone departed blockbuster movies back in the late 90’s, his subsequent flicks suffered from dwindling budgets and lacked the style of his earlier efforts. However after making a comeback with Rocky Balboa, and a few years later with Rambo – he’s being going from strength to strength. With the Expendables 2 doing respectable business at the global box-office, he’s got a slew of new flicks on the way- which includes another team up with the Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Tomb, and his upcoming collaboration with acclaimed genre film-maker Walter Hill, in the graphic novel adaptation, Bullet to the Head.
In the new flick, Stallone plays a New Orleans hitman who has to team up with a New York City cop (Sung Kang) when their respective partners are killed by the same thugs. There’s some pretty cool stuff going on in the trailer – though it may rely too heavily on stereotypical jokes, and the buddy-cop element is a familiar trope. Originally Thomas Jane (The Punisher) was to co-star with Stallone, but producer Joel Silver pushed for a pairing that played on the generational and multi-racial overtones – along the lines of Lethal Weapon, and even Walter Hill’s classic, 48 hrs.
Sly had plenty of creative control over this flick, and even oversaw the final cut which may have contributed to the studio pushing the release date back from April to February next year. However co-writer/director Walter Hill is clearly responsible for much of the creative choices and it looks like he’s turned in a stylish and humorous but ultra-violent throwback to his earlier films.
Bullet to the Head also stars former Game of Thrones heavy weight Jason Momoa. He looks to have bulked up substantially to go up against Sly, and in the trailer he has gruelling fight scene – one that he could probably win – but lets face it – probably won’t.
The film also stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje,Sarah Shahi, and Christian Slater.
