Casting the Man of Steel – Lawsuit Continues

superman_birthright_conceptWarner Bros and producer Christopher Nolan along with director Zack Snyder are currently looking for an actor to play the lead role for the titular character in their reboot of the Superman franchise. Insiders say that the net is being cast for either a current TV actor or a relative unknown in the age group of 28-32. Though hiring a TV star would cause chaos for prime time schedules as filming is likely to begin production in June. It’s thought that the call will go out to an actor whose recognizable,  but has yet to make it to the big time.

Armie Hammer

This was the case for Andrew Garfield who was plucked form obscurity for the role of Spider-man, now his talents are all the more visible in The Social Network. The same could be said of his co-star and scene stealer Armie Hammer who played the twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in the Facebook tell-all and was once set to play Batman in George Miller‘s Justice League.

Hammer‘s getting a lot of buzz as a possible contender for the Man of Steel and although younger than the age at which they’re looking (he’s 24 – the same age that Christopher Reeve was)  he has the looks,  the physique and a commanding screen presence that could put him in the running for the quintessential super-hero.

superman_birthrightAs for other roles, speculation was running rampant that the new bad guy in the reboot would be General Zod, but Snyder has since debunked those rumors.  Other sources such as Vulture claim they’ve had a look at the David S. Goyer script which is similar in tone to that of the Superman: Birthright comics which sees the traveling reporter in the midst of an uprising and is forced to use his powers to stop an assassination. He then travels back to Smallville to find out more of his alien heritage.

Reports say that the script was somewhat rushed, and this is the reason why Zack Snyder was given the top job as he’s a guy who can think on his toes and get a product put out fast. Darren Aronofsky on the other hand who got the Wolverine flick,  was also in the running however it’s thought that his development process would’ve taken longer and this is time the studios simply don’t have.

The issue of copyright is the reason why the production is moving ahead quickly, with the Studios needing a new film in place so that they can retain the rights to the lucrative character. The most recent court proceeding saw a federal judge lifting the delay in the litigation allowing Warner Bros. to proceed with key depositions of the families of Man of Steel creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel. The studios are claiming Marc Toberoff, the attorney for the Siegels and Shusters, improperly convinced the families to back out of deals and terminate their lucrative copyrights relating to Superman. Toberoff is fighting back aggressively filing a host of motions to have the case dismissed and have Warners punished for targeting him.

For now the good news is that this court fest shouldn’t interfere with the production and sometimes working under pressure turns out a better product than years of development and re-shoots.  We’re looking forward to the latest Superman and sure it will be something spectacular by any means.

Warner Bros is producing with Legendary Pictures from a story by Nolan and David S. Goyer who’s honing his script with Snyder. Nolan and his partner Emma Thomas are producing with Charles Roven and Zach‘s wife Deborah Snyder, while co-financier Legendary PicturesThomas Tull is executive producer.
