Charlize Theron has signed on to play the Evil Queen in Universal’s Snow White and The Huntsman with Michael Fassbender said to in the running for the huntsman character (Johhny Depp was originally considered). However there’s something of a race going on between Universal and Relativity Media who are also aiming to deliver a similar project with the Brothers Grimm story of Snow White, which is set to begin production in March with Tarsem Singh directing.
Julia Roberts is reportedly Relativity Media’s top choice to play the same character that Charlize will play in Rupert Sander‘s version.
The story from a screenplay by Evan Daugherty sees the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her but instead lets her go and at some point the two become chained together.
The studio is said to be moving the project along after paying $1.5 million against $3 million for the script written on spec. Theron has been eying the role since October last year and it would seem she finally decided to take the part.
Recently her name was being considered for Clint Eastwood‘s upcoming biopic of J. Edgar Hoover playing the FBI director’s longtime personal secretary, Helen Gandy. However Charlize has opted not to take the role and instead Amy Adams or Naomi Watts are now being considered.
As for the Alien Prequel, it seems that Fox execs are keen on getting a big name star preferably for the lead with production costs continuing to escalate. Though director Ridley Scott might have different plans and may have settled on Swedish actress Noomi Rapace to play the main character Elizabeth Shaw. Whilst she’s relatively unknown to western audiences, Rapace recently scored a part in the upcoming ‘Sherlock Holmes’ sequel as if the studios were priming her for bigger things.
The Alien script also features another female lead character named Vickers described as a ‘fortysomething, tough-but-sexy crewmember’ and Scott was said to be interested in Michelle Yeoh for this role. However Fox is reportedly having the part expanded to accommodate the star and the revised script will be sent to Charlize this week for her to make a decision.
Charlize Theron is currently working on Jason Reitman‘s new film ‘Young Adult’ with Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswalt, from a script by ‘Juno’ writer Diablo Cody.
