Colin Farrell is in final negotiations with Sony to play the the lead role in Columbia Pictures remake of Total Recall. For the last few weeks his name as well as Tom Hardy & Michael Fassbender were in the running but Variety is reporting that the star is in final talks.

The new film is a reworking of the original Philip K. Dick short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.

The Total Recall reboot is being helmed by Len Wiseman from a script by Kurt Wimmer, and would see Farrell playing a man tortured by his recurring dreams of a trip to Mars, but would be a decidedly different take than the Arnie FX blockbuster of 1990. This contemporary adaptation is set to incorporate the authors’ favorite themes of  reality vs. delusion, with the audience meant to question which parts are the dream-states, as opposed to Paul Verhoeven’s flick which skewed the story decidedly in favor of all out action as the resolve.

Whilst Farrell usually makes independent offbeat flicks, he recently wrapped production on a remake of the 80’s classic Fright Night playing the villainous vampire next door. He’s also set to start shooting in January alongside Eric Bana in Sheldon Turner’s crime drama By Virtue Fall, and can be seen next in Peter Weir‘s The Way Back.

Total Recall is to begin lensing in March 2011.
