Denis Leary, star of TV’s Rescue Me and famous for the ‘Asshole’ song, is set to play Dad to Emma Stone in Columbia’s new Spider-Man reboot starring Andrew Garfield. He will play police captain George Stacy, who frequently came into contact with the web-slinging superhero.
Little is being given away about the script by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent, but the rumors have been going around for some time that the latest incarnation of Spider-man would draw from the comics of the Ultimate Universe.
Interestingly the different comic versions have seen different outcomes to the eventual demise of the character that eventually lost Spidey the affections of Gwen Stacy. In the Classic version he sacrifices himself to save a child from a chunk of debris from a Spider-Man/Doc Ock showdown and in the Ultimate version he’s blown away saving another child from trouble caused by the Chameleon impersonating Spider-man. Either way he bites the dust at some point shifting his daughter’s perception to the opinion of newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson who tarnishes Spidey’s reputation as being a vigilante-social menace.
Leary’s tone as an actor and comedian has always infused his style with ironic hardcore opinions and it will be fun to see how edgy he’ll make this pivotal character.
Shooting is scheduled to commence in December, Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Laura Ziskin are producing.
