Dracula Boards The Last Voyage of the Demeter

The-Last-Voyage-of-the-Demeter

It might just be the decade of the Vampire with another origin story The Last Voyage of the Demeter, set to embark on a journey that will capture fans of the genre. David Slade who directed ’30 Days of Night’ and ‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’,  is now attached to the project. Slade has become the go-to guy for Vamp flicks and the project from Phoenix Pictures has long been in development.

From producers Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Bradley Fischer, the period horror movie has attracted such directors as Robert Schwentke and Marcus Nispel. Stefan Ruzowitzky was on board til recently but jumped ship last month to work on the just-announced drama Blackbird, with Eric Bana and Oliva Wilde.

NosferatuFans of Bram Stoker’s original would know that the ‘Demeter’ was the name of the ship that transported Dracula from Transylvania to London. In that novel, it washes up on the shores of England, with one raving mad survivor.

Written a decade ago by Bragi Schut, who also wrote the Nic Cage period flick ‘Season of the Witch’,  the voyage takes center stage  as the terrified crew members of the Russian schooner start to vanish.

The Demeter’s seasoned captain eventually confronts the voracious monster that has preyed upon his crew by moonlight. In some ways the systematic removal of the crew by the unknown passenger is reminiscent of the movie ‘Alien’.

Noomi Rapace who’ll be starring in Ridley Scott‘s new Alien flick ‘Prometheus’,  is tentatively attached to play a stowaway. Ben Kingsley is also set to star though it’s unknown if he’ll play the seasoned captain, a willing slave or the blood sucker himself.

The project is still securing financing, though with director Slade attached and the strong earnings of Eclipse’s near-$700 million box office take, it’s thought the production should come together quickly.
