After the horrendous prequel to the 1994 hit Dumb and Dumber, it seemed unlikely the original cast members or it’s directors, The Farrelly Brothers would return for a sequel. However after making their pet project The Three Stooges, the duo began moving forward on a second installment with plans for Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels to return as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, ‘the lovable dimwitted pals with big hearts and small brains’.
The original was a showcase for Carrey’s incredible talent – the flick was made for a mere $16 million, but grossed nearly $250 million worldwide. Carrey who’s not so big on sequels, began dropping hints that he was keen on a follow-up to the comedy hit when he was out promoting Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Directing and writing team Sean Anders and John Morris who recently made the Adam Sandler comedy I Hate You Dad, were hired last October to write the script.
Anders recently talked about his involvement with writing the sequel:
.…we went off and wrote Dumb and Dumber 2, and had a blast writing it. We turned it in and everybody was really happy and excited, and then Pete and Bobby took the script and went off and did their thing with it. Now, what I’m hearing from those guys is that they’re about to sit down with Jim Carrey and work through it with him. The hope is that it goes into production this Fall. That was another pinch yourself thing. Dumb and Dumber is one of my all-time favorite movies. We’re huge Farrelly brothers fans, and it was great to get to know those guys and work with those guys.
In April, director Peter Farrelly spoke with the Huffington Post – having never made a sequel, he revealed why Dumb and Dumber was an exception to the rules:
We’ve had a few opportunities where the studio said, what about making “There’s Something Else About Mary”? And it didn’t seem natural to us. It seemed like a money grab. You know, it seemed like that movie was over. However, from the very beginning, I always said I would make a sequel to “Dumb & Dumber.” Jim had so much going on over the years and he was just waiting for the right moment. Then, a year or so ago, he came to us and said, “life’s too short.” “Dumb & Dumber” is something that he’s really proud of for the joy it brings people and he wants to make people happy. And that’s the God’s honest truth, he goes, “Let’s just do it. It’s silly, it’s fun, it’s going to bring a lot of laughs to the world.”
Filming on Dumb and Dumber 2 is set to begin this September, as for what we can expect, Farrelly wasn’t divulging any script secrets but he did say that it would take place over a decade after the original, rather than continuing where the story left off :
…It picks up today. It’s 17 or 18 years later. It’s not like a month after that happened. It’s today. And we explain what they’ve been doing all those years.
