There was plenty of commotion when the sequel to GI Joe was announced, except it would be minus most of it’s cast and be a reboot of sorts – now the first trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation is here for you to judge for yourself.
It seems that when a franchise is in trouble or in need of more star power – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the actor to turn to, and while he’s a likeable dude, it seems strange having him in the lead rather than Channing Tatum– whose role seems to have been whittled down, though this may just be a narrative tactic. Funny man Marlon Wayans is no more, not to mention Dennis Quaid and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Joseph Gordon-Levitt who played Cobra Commander last time does not return though his character does, and Arnold Vosloo who played the master of disguise Zartan is back and infiltrates the White House so he can hang some new drapes. By all accounts it’s a sequel – though most of the cast have been dropped with a only a few favorites like Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee) remaining.
The imagery has lost the CGI sheen that made the ‘eye candy’ of the first so memorable – this one seems grittier with more militaristic battle scenes. Director Jon Chu takes over from Stephen Sommers who’s first effort had most hardcore GI Joe fans up in arms – perhaps the new cast and more bad-ass action can compensate. As for the babes which made the first so watchable – gone are Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller and Karolina Kurkova – in are one time ‘Wonder Woman’ Adrianne Palicki and French actress Elodie Young – who can be seen next in the upcoming remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Did we mention Bruce Willis is in it? – Yippie Ka Ye he’s back ( in what seems to John McClane mode – at least when he shoots weapons ), as the original Joe.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens June 29th, 2012.
