The first trailer for Gangster Squad is here which sees Sean Penn playing real life mob strongman, Mickey Cohen with Josh Brolin leading the Los Angeles task force assembled to bring him to justice.
From Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer, this new crime drama captures the era of the 1940’s superbly and looks very intriguing with stellar performances all round. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone reunite on screen to play a couple who begin a torrid love affair, knowing that it all might end in disaster. Sean Penn offers another of his intense portrayals, coupled with a facial prosthetic to resemble the mobster and former boxer.
While some period pieces loose sight of their surroundings, Fleischer’s flair for detail shines through, both visually and aesthetically which should make Gangster Squad a film worth catching.
Here’s the synopsis:
Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and–if he has his way–every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “The Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.
The film also stars Nick Nolte,Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick and Giovanni Ribisi.
