The new flick The Green Hornet from filmmaker Michel Gondry starring Seth Rogen as Britt Reid and Jay Chou as Kato, is a modern update of the classic comic, but since the release of the first trailer, many have doubted the film’s legitimacy.
The big question was the tone of the new flick which seemed to play to campy fun than super cool. For the fanboys when the footage was shown at this years Comic-Con International, the response was mixed at best.
When Seth spoke with Hero Complex, despite not being an avid comic book collector there were themes and characters which resonated with him and he indicated why he ventured into this territory.
I was pretty into Marvel growing up. Ed Brubaker came on the set of ‘Green Hornet’ a couple of times. That’s what’s cool is meeting these guys. I met him at Comic-Con a few years ago. It was one of those surreal moments at Comic-Con because it was me, Method Man and Ed Brubaker. But he’s great. I love his stuff. But I like Marvel. I’ve kind of given up on DC at this point.
With the film’s release pushed back to the less than prestigious date of January next year, it implied a lack of confidence on the part of the studios with some web reports claiming ‘the feeling at Sony is the movie is a disaster‘.
Though now it seems the tides may have turned after a test screening over at Long Beach which had the film scoring exceptionally high. It garnered a 93 rating in the score card’s top two boxes with 83% saying the film was ‘very good to excellent’ and would certainly recommend this film to others. The impressive numbers saw the studio execs present breathing a sigh of relief, it was also said that Amy Pascal the Co-Chairman of Sony Pictures was overheard talking the possibility of a sequel.
Whilst this doesn’t necessarily guarantee blockbuster, it does say big things about the new flick that looked impressive to us from the start.
