Mike Myers has inked a deal to return as the shagadelic super spy Austin Powers for a fourth film in the popular series. New Line have been itching for a follow up since 2002’s massive hit Goldmember, which pulled in around $300 Million at the global box-office. The third in the series saw Myers playing 4 roles including the titular bad guy Goldmember, as well as Fat Bastard and Dr Evil who was revealed to be Austin’s long lost brother. We were also introduced to Austin’s absentee secret agent fahza, Nigel Powers played to a tee by the irrepressible Michael Caine, as well as a slew of cameos in the opening and closing scenes – not to mention an appearance by Steven Spielberg.
Since the third flick, Mike Meyers continued to lend his vocal talents to the Shrek series, and played a small part in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’, though the failure of 2008’s ‘The Love Guru’ was said to have made Myers consider quitting the business.
At one stage there was talk of a Dr. Evil spin-off though in 2008 reports surfaced that Myers was indeed working on a script for fourth instalment with series writer Mike McCullers. Director Jay Roach has also been keen on returning to the franchise giving occasional updates on the progression of the story.
Myers is the kind of artist who likes to workshop his characters for some time, so the signing of this new deal indicates that he’s happy with the story and feels that the time is right for a fourth flick. Time Travel was always a part of the other stories so it wil be intersting to see if Austin Powers makes a trip back to the 80’s for his next assignment.
While there’s no official title for the flick, its expected to be released sometime in 2013 with production slated for next year.

UPDATE: While Hitfix reported that a deal was done, Deadline seems to say otherwise citing that no official deal has been struck – though likely a monetary snafu at the moment, we’ll have to wait and see.
