Henry Cavill has revealed in this months edition of Entertainment Weekly that his audition involved more than just reading lines from the script. In late January the British actor beat out many hopefuls to win the coveted role in the Zack Snyder helmed reboot.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Snyder’s testing process involved wearing a replica outfit worn by the late and great Christopher Reeve.
Instead of wearing a new costume, Snyder employed the unusual method possibly out of respect for Reeve’s Superman, and this allowed him to make sure that the baton was being passed to the right person.
Snyder said:
If you can put on that suit and pull it off, that’s an awesome achievement. Henry walked out and no one laughed. Other actors put that suit on and it’s a joke, even if they’re great actors.
Cavill wasn’t thrown by the move, in fact he was somewhat intimidated to wear it and questioned whether he was worthy to step into the shoes of such an iconic character.
He admitted:
All I could think was, ‘Oh, God, they’re going to look at me and go he’s not Superman. Not a chance’. The actor inside me was going, ‘You’re not ready! You’re not ready!
Snyder added that wearing the suit allowed Cavill to embody the necessary qualities of the character:
Henry put it on, and he exuded this kind of crazy-calm confidence that just made me go, ‘Wow. OK, this is Superman’.
Casting is still underway on the franchise reboot, and there has been much talk about which villains will feature – the most discussed is the the character of Ursa which beckons the question will Zod also feature in the story. As yet the role of investigative reporter Lois Lane has not been cast, at one stage the character was thought not to feature.
As yet no announcement on those parts have been made, however the biggest bit of casting news that’s setting the internet ablaze is that Kevin Costner is being eyed for a significant role. The actor has been playing good guys of late and recently played a mentoring part in the John Wells-directed ‘The Company Men’. Now it looks like all that patriarchal concern could see him land the role of Jonathan Kent.
The screenplay is still said to be undergoing a major rewrite, which is re-assuring as Snyder likely has his own grand plan that will come into play.
The Superman reboot is being produced by Christopher Nolan, Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder from the original story by David S. Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips will serve as executive producers.
The new film is set for release in December 2012.
