There’s little doubt that Star Trek Into Darkness is one of 2013’s most highly anticipated flicks, and with the release of the 9 minute IMAX prologue that’s currently screening with The Hobbit – questions still surround the films’ enigmatic villain known only as John Harrison.
Benedict Cumberbatch became an overnight sensation with his modern take on the fictional super sleuth Sherlock Holmes – he’s set to reprise the role when filming on the third season commences in March for a late 2013 air-date. That said, Trek fans are equally excited to see what depths of villainy he’ll bring to this newest Trek baddie.
Without spoiling the fun, the 9-minute preview features Cumberbatch only briefly – offering former Doctor Who cast member Noel Clarke, a solution that could explain why in the trailer we see him fight with super human ability. That said, many believe that his character is just a cover for the classic Star Trek villain Khan Noonien Singh, who was part of a genetically engineered group of humans who fought to take over the world in what became known as, the Eugenics Wars.

Speaking with Empire for it’s latest issue, director J.J. Abrams revealed more about the mysterious villain that Cumberbatch plays:
So this movie doesn’t require you have seen the first movie. The characters are a group of people who have recently come together and find themselves up against this incredibly terrifying force. His name is John Harrison and he is sort of an average—that is what makes him so scary—he is just an average guy who works in an organization called Starfleet, and he turns against the group because he has got this back-story and this kind of amazing secret agenda. After two very violent attacks, one in London and one in the US, our characters have to go after this guy and apprehend him. And it is a far more complicated and difficult thing then they ever anticipated. Into Darkness is very much about how intense it gets and really what they are up against.
Yet the sequel isn’t all about the darkness, says Abrams:
This is a movie that they certainly go ‘into darkness,’ but I would be the wrong director if it was about characters staying there. This is very much a movie about hope, about love, about romance, and about facing something that is truly terrifying and finding a way through the connection of your family and surviving and being stronger afterwards.
