The Dibbuk Box is the new horror flick that’s being produced by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert under their Ghost House Pictures banner. The production has been building momentum with ‘The Closer’ star Kyra Sedgwick recently joining the cast as one of the story’s divorced parents. Jeffrey Dean Morgan of ‘Watchmen’ and ghost to Izzie in ‘Greys Anatomy’ has also been confirmed as the other half of the divorced duo. From Lionsgate Films, the horror-thriller will be directed by Danish director Ole Borneda from a script by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White.

Dibbuk_boxThe story sees the divorced couple’s youngest daughter Em (Natasha Calis) purchasing a strange antique wooden box at a yard sale. She becomes weirdly attached to the object and her behavior increasingly erratic. Luckily Pa Morgan senses that an evil presence is lurking, so he and Sedgwick get the carvings on the box deciphered which reveal that it was actually built to contain a Dibbuk –  a dislocated spirit that  inhabits then later devours the human host.

It all sounds pretty scary and is apparently based on the real life events that happened to Clyde Breneck and his 10-year-old daughter Em, who actually bought the box off ebay which contained an evil spirit brought to America by a Holocaust survivor. Guess they changed the ‘ebay’ part of the story so folks wouldn’t think that evil things can be purchased online, only at yard sales.

Sedgwick recently wrapped production on Summit’s ‘Man on a Ledge’ opposite Sam Worthington and will be winding up production on ‘The Closer’ this year.  Morgan also worked with the ‘Avatar’ star on the murder mystery ‘The Fields’ and has completed MGM/UA’s reboot of  ‘Red Dawn’ as well as Bruce Beresford’s ‘Peace, Love and Misunderstanding’ alongside Jane Fonda.

The former TV sensation is also set to play the lead in Starz’s upcoming 10-episode drama series Magic City, which sees Morgan running a hotel which becomes a social hot spot for mobsters,  politicians and entertainers circa the late 1950’s.  The series is created by Mitch Glazer and will soon begin production in Miami eying a 2012 premiere.

The Dibbuk Box is set for release October 28, 2011.
