The latest take on the world of Oz is now coming to life in glorious CGI with some impressive vocal talents stepping into the shoes of the timeless characters. The 1939 classic movie starring Judy Garland was based on the children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and was a stunning adaptation with a memorable cast, ground breaking visual effects and the use of vivid Technicolor.
Dorothy of Oz is based on the novel of the same name by the great-grandson Roger S. Baum with Summertime entertainment producing in the hopes of making a series of flicks drawn from his stories. The screenplay is by Randi Barnes, Adam Balsam and Barry Glasser and is a follow-up to the classic story that sees the character of Dorothy Gale returning to a tornado-devastated Kansas and is then transported back to Oz to help her friends.
It’s interesting to note that the classic film made a significant change to the story by making the world of Oz part of her unconscious dream state after the tornado hit, which in the book is all part of a real adventure. We’ll have to see how much of the new film borrows from the classic or whether it’s a more faithful retelling of the modern novels.
Gorgeous Glee star Lea Michele is bringing to life the classic character of Dorothy which is set make use of her obvious vocal talents. When interviewed by ET she spoke of how she was enjoying balancing her current projects.
It’s just really nice to get to step into a different world for a little while, I thoroughly enjoy being at William McKinley High School Monday through Friday at ‘Glee,’ but it’s been really great to step into another world and play another character for a little while. It only makes the job that I do every day even more enjoyable.
Song lyrics are being contributed by Tift Merritt and Mike Himelstein and supervised by Vicki Hiatt with additional songs by Bryan Adams and Jim Dooley providing the film’s score.
Also starring is Kelsey Grammer as The Tin Man, James Belushi as The Cowardly Lion and Dan Aykroyd as the Scarecrow. New characters will see Patrick Stewart as Tugg, Hugh Dancy as Marshall Mallow, Oliver Platt as Wiser the Owl, Martin Short as The Jester, Michael Krawic as Uncle Henry and Megan Hilty as China Princess.
