LES MISERABLES Starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe – First Trailer

The first trailer for Oscar winning director Tom Hooper‘s Les Misérables is here based on the classic French novel by Victor Hugo. This time the film goes back to it’s Broadway roots by turning the flick into a musical, let’s face it – singing is cool again, and this certainly brings a creative edge to this latest cinematic interpretation.  Surprisingly Anne Hathaway who’s playing  the character Fantine, belts out some impressive notes throughout the entire trailer to create quite a rousing and emotional labyrinth for which this story traverses. The director decided to have the cast perform their songs live rather than recording them in the studio, and this seems to have made a big difference in Hathaway’s case, helping to deepen her character’s plight. The detailed city architecture and squalid surroundings look authentic, and there’s some interesting camerawork being used to better capture this classic tale.

Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean looks pretty gaunt ( as does most of the cast ), having lost quite a bit of muscle for the role – he’s bulking up again for The Wolverine next – and Russell Crowe playing Javert does quite a bit frowning since his character is always pretty suspicious. Crowe has his own rock band so he should be able to carry a note. Eddie Redmayne also features as does Amanda Seyfried.

The tone of the trailer is one of hope and the ongoing struggle of humanity, and this timeless story seems to have found a talented collection of performers and filmmakers to bring a fresh vision to the screen.

Les Misérables also stars Samantha BarksSacha Baron Cohen, and Helena Bonham Carter.

Les Misérables opens December 1, 2012.
