Liam Neeson replaces Mel in the Hangover 2

Liam NeesonIt was quite the news over recent days when the cast of the Hangover 2, specifically Zach Galifianakis objected to the participation of  former superstar Mel Gibson in a cameo appearance. Somewhat ironic that Zach makes a living playing drug induced losers popping all sorts of drugs in the Hangover and in HBO’s Bored to Death he’s hardly a role model by being a pot addicted social drop-out.  As it turned out his objection influenced the rest of the cast, much to the dismay of director Todd Phillips:

I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of Jeff Robinov and his team. But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort…

As for recasting it seems Bradley Cooper having worked just recently with Liam Neeson in the A-Team, called in a favor and has got the star to fill the role of the intimidating tattoo artist. The actor is said to be flying to the location to film his scenes this Sunday. Of the last minute casting the actor said:

I just got the call to do a one-day shoot on ‘Hangover 2′ as a tattooist in Thailand, and that’s all I know about it. I just laughed my leg off when I saw ‘The Hangover.’ I was shooting in Berlin earlier this year and rented it on the hotel TV.

Perhaps in future productions some actors will  refuse to work with Zach, but then he’ll probably never become an Oscar winning Director who then hits rock bottom. Nonetheless we’ll still see the Hangover 2, mostly for Bradley Cooper who offset’s Zach’s loser character.

What do you think, was it unfair of Zach Galifianakis to prevent another actor from working, or has Mel‘s troubles stained his reputation forever?

The Hangover 2 hits cinemas May 262011.
