This week brought the strongest indication that Matt Damon hasn’t entirely left behind his character of Jason Bourne and hopes to someday reprise the role. Universal is moving ahead with ‘The Bourne Legacy’ without Matt Damon or director Paul Greengrass. The proposed follow-up sounds more ludicrous each time the title is mentioned, how can it be called The Bourne Legacy without Jason Bourne?
Tony Gilroy was brought in to write a fourth installment and soon landed the director’s job, though Matt Damon stated he would only work with Paul Greengrass who directed the second and third installments. With the studio intent on a follow up of some kind, a story has been devised that involves another operative in similar bind going through a similar set of experiences – Gilroy has stated that Jason Bourne would still be alive in the new story except the characters and events would take place in a concurrent time-line of sorts.
The proposed fourth installment of Bourne which is set for release August 3rd 2012, still doesn’t have an actor attached and the whole thing is sounding riskier by the minute. Though if the studios want a new movie it shouldn’t be too hard to find a willing actor and make a decent flick, the question is will audiences embrace it and will it tarnish the franchise?
At the recent Critics’ Choice Awards, Matt Damon received the Joel Siegel Award for Service to the Community. Following his acceptance speech, Damon fielded questions backstage about his hopes to make another Bourne flick and the reasons for the delays.
He added that the decision didn’t rest entirely with him, and much of the reason to move forward was with the director:
It’s really up to Paul Greengrass, the director. I’ve always said I won’t do it without him and I think it would be a bad idea to do it without Paul.
He said that he the director is working on a few other projects right now, but he’s hopeful they can return to the franchise.
I think it’s kind of the thing where enough time has passed that I think it won’t matter if we wait five more years to do it.
The third film was a defining entry to the series, though it’s unresolved ending gave fans hope of another movie. Greengrass abandoned the series when he learned the studios were developing parallel scripts for a fourth movie whilst he and Damon were working on ‘Green Zone’.Damon’s recent words are encouraging that if given the chance the duo would return sooner, the only obstacle would be putting the kibosh on the Gilroy venture.
Whilst five years is better than nothing, in movies it’s an eternity.Though if they do return they would want to make a film worthy of the series.
We just want to make sure if we do it, that we do it right. There’s been a lot of pressure for us to do it obviously but that’s that moment I think where you got to step back and make sure you’re not making a mistake. So when it feels like the right time, I think Paul would be open to doing it.
Let’s hope the real Bourne returns sooner than later.
