Despite the mega success of Transformers 3 which earned $1.1 billion at the global box office, director Michael Bay said that he was leaving the alien robot franchise behind, as did star Shia LaBeouf. The studio however was keen to keep the money flowing and announced plans for back to back sequels and possibly find a new filmmaker who might achieve the same CG action and carnage that Bay effortlessly creates.
Recent reports however indicate that studio Paramount and toy Maker Hasbro have been in discussions with executive producer Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay to helm a new batch of sequels – with screenwriter Ehren Kruger said to be developing ideas for fresh installments.
Now speaking with EW, Spielberg was asked whether he thought Bay would return:
I hope so, because I think he made the best of the three with this last one. I certainly can’t imagine anybody other than Michael being equipped to make another Transformers. He’s invented a genre and he’s got the secret formula.
Bay however is working on a low budget body-building flick ‘Pain and Gain’. When that’s finished its likely he’ll commence work on returning to his most successful franchise:
Talking withChannel News Asia here’s what he had to say:
How did I know someone’s going to ask me this question today? We’re talking about it, but there’s nothing right now. I’m going to do a tiny movie first, then we’ll talk about it, if I potentially do it.
This is sure to make fans and Paramount very happy. Now if only they can lure Shia back – which shouldn’t be too hard, the thought of Jason Statham in the lead is just wrong, but bringing Megan Fox back could be a better idea.
