Last week we featured the first images from Entertainment Weekly with Jason Segel posing with his muppet co-stars in the new film that he’ wrote with his Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller. In The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made directed by James Bobin, Jason Segel plays Gary whose best friend is a muppet named Walter, (voiced by Paul Rudd) and the two must try to save the muppet theater when it’s threatened by the bad guy played by Chris Cooper.
The magazine spread was commissioned by Disney and you can read how it was accomplished over at macfly.com. An alternate version of the cover shows the co-writer and director getting in on the action along with Flight of The Conchords star Bret Mackenzie. As for the set pics they were captured on an iPhone thanks to Peter Sciretta of Slashfilm who got a tip-off where they were shooting. Snapped this weekend at the Jim Henson Studios on La Brea Avenue in Hollywood, the pics show how it’s been transformed into the setting for the dilapidated Muppet Studios as part of the film’s storyline. The Henson studios were originally built by Charlie Chaplin in 1917 where he shot some of his classic films and later became home to the cartoon studios of Hanna Barbera. The large statue of Kermit the Frog on the roof of the main building pays homage to Chaplin.
The photos snapped show an abandoned admission booth at the entrance and the Electric Mayhem Bus featured in The Muppet Movie can also be seen. Shooting was underway and the snaps appear to show the film’s new muppet Walter in a scene where the muppeteers are in a go-cart looking contraption which give the illusion of the muppet walking.
Expect a lot of celebrity cameos in the film and reports indicate we’ll see Sean Penn, Eric Stonestreet, John Krasinski, Ed Helms, Lady Gaga, Jack Black, Donald Glover, Jane Lynch (rumored), Danny Trejo and Zach Galifianakis as Hobo Jo.
The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made will hit cinemas Christmas Day, 2011.
