With the announcement by New Line Cinema that Cate Blanchett will be reprising her role as Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, the expected confirmation of other original cast members is not far off. Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Hugo Weaving (Elrond) are all said to be in talks but will likely return.

The biggest bit of news is that Orlando Bloom could be the next original cast member to return to Middle Earth for an encore. He’s said to be working out a deal which will see him reprise his role as Elven archer Legolas which will be a significant part and more than just a cameo.

Though his character doesn’t appear in the original J.R.R. Tolkein book, his father Thranduil the Elvenking does and Legolas was around during the time-frame of The Hobbit. His character was several thousand years old during the Lord of the Rings therefore a younger counterpart could feature leading the wood-elf contingent into the ‘Battle of Five Armies ‘or by way of some other reveal which Jackson has worked into the story.

The Hobbit Part 1 will be released in 3D on December 2012 and part 2 December 2013.
