It’s always a momentous day when a new trailer for an animated flick from Pixar debuts. While ‘Cars 2’ may not have the same allure as say a ‘Toy Story’ sequel, just about anything that Pixar put’s their minds to is bona-fide brilliance. Their new medieval themed fantasy tale of a heroine from the Scottish plains is no exception, and from the first trailer for Brave we can see just how much effort has been put in by the animation team rendering the detailed landscapes of Scotland to create another wondrous experience.
Pixar flicks always have heart and soul, not to mention well thought out plots, unlike Disney’s CGI flicks who on their own just can’t capture the same magic. Brave looks like another fantastic movie but more importantly one with a message, with a title like ‘Brave’ you begin to wonder what will happen to the main character for this title to have meaning. When watching the trailer you get a discernible vibe that Pixar captures so effortlessly, and for a younger audience it conveys the message of doing what’s right, and accepting the many challenges that in life one must face.
Director Mark Andrews spoke to EW, and had this to say as to how Brave will differ in tone from other Pixar flicks:
What we want to get across is that this story has some darker elements. Not to frighten off our Pixar fans — we’ll still have all the comedy and the great characters. But we get a little bit more intense here.
Brave stars the vocal talents of Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane, and Julie Walters.
Here’s the synopsis:
Brave is set in the mystical Scottish Highlands, where Merida is the princess of a kingdom ruled by King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). An unruly daughter and an accomplished archer, Merida one day defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings turmoil to the kingdom. In an attempt to set things right, Merida seeks out an eccentric old Wise Woman (Julie Walters) and is granted an ill-fated wish. Also figuring into Merida’s quest — and serving as comic relief — are the kingdom’s three lords: the enormous Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), the surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson), and the disagreeable Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane).
Brave opens June 22nd, 2012.
