The first trailer for the remake of the 1984 action flick Red Dawn has been released. The flick has been stuck in release limbo for almost 3 years, made back in 2009 – so expect to see some younger looking faces of today’s big names such as Thor star Chris Hemsworth, and Hunger Games tribute, Josh Hutcherson.
MGM’s financial meltdown was attributed to the delay, and lack of distributor. However what’s more interesting is the change of baddie in the story after the film was made. In the original 1984 version, the flick preyed on the Cold War fears of the time, with the Soviets as the invading forces. This time round it was the Chinese – until the studio and distributors realized how the film could potentially harm their ability to do business with the rising Asian superpower, which has become a lucrative market for American movies and other U.S. products.
As a result, the filmmakers spent close to a $1 million bucks making changes to depict much of the invading force as being from North Korea, a country where American media companies have no dollars at stake. Changes made include an opening sequence which summarizes the story’s fictional backdrop, new dialogue, re-edited scenes and digital effects to transform many of the Chinese symbols to Korean.
That said it’s hard to imagine the U.S being invaded, but then there a lot of events which seem unlikely until they happen. The remake sees the characters going on a mission rather than simply trying to survive like in the original. They’re some cool imagery in the trailer and the action looks quite substantial – so all up it could be a lot of fun.
The film also stars Adrianne Palicki, Josh Peck, Isabel Lucas, Edwin Hodge, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
