With more than half a year before Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus opens, fans continue to have mixed expectations as to how the film ties in to the movie that began a franchise. What started out as a desire by the filmmaker to create a set of prequel flicks soon evolved into some thing more unique when Damon Lindelof was brought on board. His approach was not to step on the toes of the original, or retread similar ground – but to tell a new story that exists somewhere in the same universe.
Now Ridley Scott confirms how the film indirectly ties into Alien by exploring the mystery of the Space Jockey:
Yeah, so there you have that… I always thought it was amazing that no one ever asked who he was, and why was he there? What was all that about? I sat thinking about this for a while and thought, “Well, there’s a story! And the other four [films] missed it!” So, here it is.
Scott talked about how they shot in Iceland to depict “the beginning of time,” which Scott thinks turned out quite well:
It’s actually “The beginning of time”. But I think we’ve got it right… [laughter] So, it will be a pretty good beginning of time.
Scott has hinted how the film examines the questions of both humanity and the gods. What we’ve gleamed about the story is an archaeological dig uncovers secrets that begin a voyage into the farthest reaches of space on board the ‘Prometheus’, where the crew venture onto a strange planet.
Scott also said how original Alien designer H.R. Giger provided some murals that appear in the movie “in almost one of the first chambers we encounter when we land where we’re gonna go.”
However as Scott confirms, Giger’s most famous design – the Xenomorph, won’t be showing up and Scott explains why:
They squeezed it dry. He (the xenomorph) did very well. (He laughs) He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!
The film stars Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, and Michael Fassbender.
