Expectation continues to rise for the latest installment of the Apes franchise that delves into the themes of scientific research that might lead to the eventual downfall of human civilization. There’s been a few new trailers in the recent weeks, but the latest from promo from the U.K does a fine job of setting up the story. What’s also a standout are the impressive accomplishments of WETA digital and the performance by Andy Serkis as the Ape Caesar. The trailer also shows imagery that’s reminiscent of the 1968 original, such as police officers on horseback chasing down the apes and Harry Potter star Tom Felton maliciously hosing down Caesar in the cage.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes chronicles the efforts of a genetic engineer named Will Rodman (James Franco) as he tests his new drug for curing Alzheimer’s disease on apes, including a young Caesar. As the chimp matures, he also begins to develop human-level intelligence and is able to communicate with his surrogate human family. Caesar’s inability to function in human society eventually forces Rodman to move him to a primate sanctuary run by a cruel man (Brian Cox) – whose actions eventually inspire Caesar to lead a rebellion against his captors.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens August 5th, 2011.
