Explosive Hardcore Action with Martial Arts Newcomer
Here’s the new trailer for the spy-action flick Haywire, which stars MMA fighter Gina Carano beating the crap out of just about everyone. While at first you might think that this is just a knock’em down action piece – surprisingly it’s directed by acclaimed filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, who usually makes thrillers and dramas as opposed to what is a hard core revenge piece with visceral action and hand to hand combat. The trailers show that this is going to be somewhat of a departure from Soderbergh’s previous films, but also a genre piece that’s sure to have the necessary substance that will set it apart.
Carano first came to the filmmaker’s attention when he saw her fighting on TV in a MMA match and thought it would be cool to build a movie around her. Soderbergh then recruited screenwriter Lem Dobbs (The Limey) to develop a premise for a female-centric revenge film. With her incredible physical prowess, the director knew the female action star could do all of her own fighting and stunts. Surrounding this young and talented fighter who’s also a novice actress with big stars gives the film plenty of weight – Haywire stars Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, and Bill Paxton.
The actress said that starring in an action movie was a “crazy, adrenaline rush” and while she preferred the physical scenes, she also learned a bit about acting while working with the master filmmaker. She describes her character Mallory Kane as a special ops agent “who just gets the job done.” Her story is that of a burned spy who takes revenge against her handlers after she’s betrayed. As a revenge piece with a stunning central character that can dispatch people with this ease, this could be a very appealing cinematic outing – and if the script has all the genre filled twists and turns, it should be worth checking out.
Here’s the synopsis:
This dynamic action-thriller directed by Oscar® winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) boasts a talented cast that includes Channing Tatum (GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra), Ewan McGregor (The Ghost Writer), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Antonio Banderas (The Legend of Zoro), Bill Paxton (“Big Love”), Michael Douglas (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Michael Angarano (Almost Famous); and introduces mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Gina Carano as Mallory Kane, in a demanding lead role that has her performing her own high-adrenaline stunts.
Mallory Kane is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.
Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious—and dangerous—trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary.
Haywire opens on January 20, 2012.
