For fans of Superman, a momentus day has arrived with Warner Bros releasing the first official image of Henry Cavill as Superman in Zack Snyder’s upcoming reboot, Man of Steel. Gone are the murky tones seen in Bryan Singer’s cinematic calamity, the new image reveals a classic looking outfit, with traditional colours coupled with an impressive updating of the iconic design. The emblem is somewhat larger, the cape is majestic and the suit has a somewhat scaly but interplanetary feel. The image also shows Henry Cavill in a pose fitting of a superhero that emphasizes a snapshot of the action the flick is certain to feature; conveying a sense of magnitude as he tears through a safe vault.
Cavill was recently interviewed for his upcoming Greek gods flick Immortals, and spoke of how he’s upped his workout regime so that he can bulk up for Superman, saying that he’s gained 25 pounds for the role:
I’m training two and a half hours a day, pushing my body beyond its normal limits, putting on a lot of muscle mass and just making myself look like Superman.
He also reflected on what it’s like to be stepping into the shoes of this time honoured character:
It’s very humbling to be chosen to represent such an enormous character with so much depth to it as well, but at the same time, it’s a true honor. I want to do justice to the character and I want to be the right guy for the job. I want to prove them right…

While the film was thought to be debuting sometime in late 2012, the release date has since been pushed back to 2013. There was recent talk that the script was still being fine tuned but production is clearly underway and so the extra time will allow for special effects work and additional photography which is the norm for a production of this magnitude.
The film was recently shooting in North Central Illinois with an accident scene being shot on the U.S. 52 bridge east of Serena; locals got to see a school bus go over the side of the bridge – sounds like a job for Clark / Superman! Production will also be taking place in downtown Chicago where building exteriors will be shot later this month. You can check out set photos on the Man of Steel’s Facebook page.
Recent casting news has seen Laurence Fishburne join the cast as the first black actor to play The Daily Planet’s Editor-in-Chief – Perry White. Other casting news from the recent press release has Harry Lennix playing U.S. military man General Swanwick, and Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy – not Lois Lane’s military pa as it was first believed.
The release of the first official image of earth’s favorite Kryptonian offers a good indication that the film is headed in the right direction, and with Christopher Nolan shepherding the project and Snyder claiming it will be his most realistic film to date ( for a superhero movie that is ) fans may finally get a movie fitting of this classic Superhero.
Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel opens June 14, 2013.
