Filming is now underway on the highly anticipated third installment of the Batman saga. Production started early this month in Jodhpur, India, before moving to other locations which include North America (Pittsburgh, New York, and Los Angeles), Europe (England and Scotland), and Asia (India).
With the commencement of shooting comes the first image of a major character via the official website thedarkknightrises.com. The image was obtained via a twitter campaign to reveal the image, and as we can see it shows Tom Hardy as Bane wearing a mask as depicted in the comics. It’s always interesting to see how director Christopher Nolan puts a real world spin on the comic book figures. As Bane, Tom Hardy looks very menacing and is likely part of the rumored ‘The League Of Shadows’ who are out for Batman. An early sound recording is also part of the viral campaign – you can here it here:

Rumors are still running rife trying to pin point certain characters even despite the press releases. We know that Anne Hathaway is playing Catwoman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt who was believed to be playing Alberto Falcone / The Holiday Killer or the Black Mask, will instead be playing John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.
The remaining question is the role assigned to Marion Cotillard. The press release has her playing Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member who’s eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. The speculation is that she is in fact playing Talia Al Ghul, the long lost daughter of Ra’s Al Ghul and similarly to Liam Neeson will have a dual identity. Other cast include Daniel Sunjata ( Rescue Me), Diego Klattenhoff (Lucky Number Slevin), and Burn Gorman (Torchwood) as well as UK actress Juno Temple (Cracks) who will play a ‘street-smart Gotham girl’. Nestor Carbonell (Lost) will most likely reprise his role as Gotham City’s Mayor. Aaron Eckhart has also indicated that we might even see a return of his twisted character Harvey Dent, despite earlier reports to the contrary.
The first images which leaked were from the brief shoot in India and revealed an oval-shaped pit with a green screen being prepared by the crew – many believe this is Ra’s al Ghul’s notorious ‘Lazarus Pits’. Those who watched the first days of filming described a young bald headed child emerging from the well wearing ragged clothes and then pulling his hood over his head. It’s thought that this could be the beginnings of Bane who’s trained by Ra’s Al Ghul. If Marion Cotillard is playing Talia Al Ghul, Bane might serve as her muscle and become a formidable foe against Batman.
Josh Pence is playing a younger version of Ra’s al Ghul and Israeli actor Alon Abutbul who plays ‘Dr. Armand Silva’ in ‘Fringe’, might also be playing another ‘evil scientist’ which many think might be the character of Dr. Hugo Strange, who’s long been suspected of being an included character.
As for how the movie will look, the press release confirms that IMAX cameras are being used to shoot a large portion of the story, and while logistically the format is not suitable for all scenes it’s likely that director Nolan will be incorporating larger film formats such as 65mm to bridge the gap.
Here’s the portion of the press release.
Christopher Nolan is utilizing IMAX® cameras even more extensively than he did on “The Dark Knight,” which had marked the first time ever that a major feature film was partially shot with IMAX® cameras. The results were so spectacular that the director wanted to expand the use of the large-format cameras for this film.
The film stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine.
The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012.
