Anticipation for the next installment of Batman is reaching fever pitch even though the film doesn’t open til next year. Warner Bros recently announced that Anne Hathaway had joined the cast to play Selina Kyle aka Catwoman and that Tom Hardy would be playing a villain, though not as Dr. Hugo Strange as it was believed, but as the character of Bane.
Watching Inception or The Dark Knight one can see the visuals are obviously incredible, now cinematographer Wally Pfister talks to the Kevin and Josh Movie Show about the new movie having recently read the script. He spoke for a while about achieving the dream sequences for ‘Inception’, but the topic soon turned to The Dark Knight Rises, written by Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan. When asked whether the new film could top the successful sequel, Pfister revealed how impressed he was with the new script:
I asked the same question. I read the script two weeks ago, and he’s done it. Plain and simple — he’s done it. It’s a phenomenal script. He’s still in the process of cutting it back because it’s a very long script right now, but it’s really phenomenal. And he actually had me go back and wanted me to watch, in IMAX, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight again. When I watched those I had read the script for The Dark Knight Rises and was like, ‘dude, it is a perfect trilogy.’ I think that was his intent, to work off those two pictures — and they are very different pictures. And it’s funny, we all had different opinions about which picture we like better.
For some time it’s been thought that Nolan would be using IMAX to greater effect in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, Pfister now confirms this:
Our goal is to shoot as much in IMAX as we can. We’re going to put in on the screen, and put it on the screen big. And I really encourage everyone to see it in IMAX if they can because we’re really going for it this time. In terms of the action, we are all scratching our heads right now trying to figure out how we’re going to do it; how we’re going to do it in the amount of time we’re going to do it in. The opening scene of the movie will blow your mind.
It makes you wonder what exactly Nolan has dreamed up for the opening, is it visually on a par with or better than ‘TDK’? Might it involve Bane’s prison-break or one of Catwoman’s heists? Or with Batman riding off into the night as an anti-hero in ‘TDK’, perhaps the opening scene showcases his redemption as the Caped Crusader.
Pfister also revealed that he shot Anne Hathaway’s screen test and had this to say about her in the role of Catwoman:
She’s so good. She did an incredible job. She is a great, great actress… and she looked phenomenal in the wardrobe.
As for more casting news, ‘Inception’ co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be joining the movie. The actor did an amazing job performing his own stunts for Inception’s mind bending sequences and his formidable acting talents have secured him a role in ‘TDKR’. With both Hardy and Gordon Levitt on board for the Nolan film, it’s looking to be a reunion of sorts.
It’s long been thought that if Gordon Levitt joined the flick, that he might play a villain. While we dare not add fuel to the fire lets just say ‘riddle me this, riddle me that’.
The actor is currently completing work on the Rian Johnson-directed ‘Looper’ with Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt and will then join the Nolan production which starts this May.
Pfister’s interview gives fascinating insight into what we can expect from ‘TDKR’, and along with countless fans we’re looking forward to seeing the talents that will be harnessed for the rumored final film.
