Here’s a film that’s getting a lot of buzz mostly for an emaciated looking Christian Bale who plays Dicky Ecklund, a former fighter who threw away his shot at greatness and fell into drug addiction. Mark Wahlberg plays his half brother Micky Ward, a struggling boxer who tries to live up to his brother’s expectations, though his career is starting to fail. Amy Adams also features as the strong willed girlfriend Charlene who convinces him to pursue his own interests and train without his unpredictable brother. Though when his mum played by Melissa Leo and family reenter his life, Micky has to decide what ‘s best for his family and train for a fight that could unite them all.
The movie is inspired by a true story of two brothers who overcome the odds to train for a historic title bout that helped their fractured family heal. It’s a gritty story that plays out in a realistic way and whilst it could be too hard hitting for some, it certainly packs a punch, so to speak, and is definitely a contender come Oscar Time.
