The first trailer for Joe Carnahan’s The Grey has been released starring Liam Neeson in a man vs wolves story. The glimpses that we’re offered show Liam’s character focusing on the memories of his lost wife and the struggle that the group of stranded oil riggers must endure in the treachourous snowy mountains. Things are made somwehat more challenging when a pack of blood thirsty wolves start picking them off one by one. We see that Neeson has designed his own weapon to combat them and sports a broken-bottle glove to take on one of the ferocious animals.
All up the trailer looks fun, with an added does of insanity – lets face are wolves all that bad? A-Team director Cranaham want you to think so with his angle that the wolves are more or less the monster of the movie – in February he had this to say:
I know that if you look at a wolf for too long, it’s just a [cuddly] malamute. So we’re doing the Jaws approach. They’re like the slasher in a slasher movie.
Distributors Open Road seem pretty impressed with what they’ve seen and are thinking that this could be an Oscar worthy performance from Neeson, and may give the film an early release in December so as to qualify.
The film also stars Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney, Dallas Roberts, Joe Anderson, James Badge Dale, and Nonso Anozie.
Here’s the synopsis:
A group of oil-rig roughnecks are left stranded on the sub-arctic tundra after their plane experiences a complete mechanical failure and crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. The survivors, battling mortal injuries, biting cold and ravenous hunger, are relentlessly hunted and pursued by a vicious pack of rogue wolves.
The Grey opens January 27, 2012.
