The Thing Gets a New Release Date

THE-THING-2011

We were pretty excited when he heard that a follow-up to the 1982 John Carpenter flick The Thing was being made. The original was a FX tour de force that introduced audiences to an alien that would take the form of others in the most horrifying manner. The story lent itself to insane paranoia where no-one was sure of who was human and who was The Thing and only after blood tests or the threat of danger would the alien be forced to reveal itself. What would follow was a shape shifting sequence that tore up the screen with repulsive but satisfyingly indulgent and memorable gore.

The expectation of a new prequel story was exciting as it became known that it would boast a combination of practical effects  and current CGI technology. However a few weeks back the release date of April 29, 2011 was changed to TBD, and since then fans have been in limbo wondering when that new date might be.

Now it has been announced that the release date has been pushed back to October 14, 2011. This can usually be unsettling news as in some cases it means the studio has lost faith in the project or the film has run into a creative snag.

However it turns out that the delay is due the production continuing, it seems that some scenes required enhancement both narratively and visually. The reports are that in the initial scene when The Thing first makes an appearance, the effects needed to be re-defined to fully convey the necessary punch for audiences as well as new story elements in the form of narrative bookends to clarify some story beats which producer Marc Abraham told hitfix. Some of the cast will be returning to the set for the pick-ups and effects work will continue into the new year  – so the good news is that it’s not being rushed and additional work can only mean good things for a production of this caliber.

The original release date has now gone to the fifth film in the Fast and Furious franchise… say that quickly!

Anyway, check out some cool set pics of the upcoming flick which we’ll have to wait ’til next October before we can start gasping …’The Horror!’
