For some time it has been touch and go but it seems that the stars are in alignment and confirmations of rumors seem fortuitous for fans of their favorite Xenomorph, aka the Alien. The esteemed director of the original Alien franchise Sir Ridley Scott, will be returning to helm a brand new installment of the classic sci-fi / horror flick that re-defined the genre.
In May 09 Tony Scott confirmed that a prequel movie was being planned and that Carl Rinsch of Scott Free productions would be directing, however Fox execs were reluctant to give the green-light and it would seem that they held out long enough for Sir Ridley to finally agree.
With the filmmaker firmly locked-in, financiers have stepped up and the word is that two prequel films are now in the works and will be shot ‘back to back’. This makes sense for a production of this scale which would be wasted on a single film and could take full advantage of the filmmaker’s unique vision, not to mention the odds of lightning striking twice; luring Scott back some years down the road would be unlikely.
The new prequels will allow the master director to re-claim and re-invent the Alien universe in a way which other filmmakers have been able to do with the franchise, with the exception of James Cameron‘s entry which offered a whole new take on the Alien world.
For fans of the original film and for the new generation of movie goers it will likely not only surpass the original visually, but will be a worthy addition to the genre plagued by countless imitations.
Check out a classic scene from the original movie where screen legend Harry Dean Stanton is just trying to find that darn cat, Jonesy.
