Top Gun may be getting a long overude sequel with ‘Thor’ writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz reportedly tackling a rewrite of the script originally penned by ‘The Usual Suspects’ screenwriter, Christopher McQuarrie. A follow-up to the 1986 mega-hit has been on the cards for some time, though no clue on what the new story might be, there have been suggestions of the high-tech drones and other advancements the air force use today.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer who loves a good sequel is on board to return, and director Tony Scott has also conveyed interest – his mind blowing visuals on the first set the standard for aerial combat flicks and the slew of imitations which followed. Tom Cruise has hinted that he might be interested in returning, though contingent on a script and schedule – if it is a direct sequel his character would’ve likely progressed through the ranks, or his role could be that of a cameo, passing the baton to a new generation.
If a sequel is made, they’ll need to come up with a similarly memorable catch phrase that will become as synonymous as: ‘I feel the need, the need for speed!’
