A new trailer for has been released for writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as World War II veteran Lancaster Dodd, who becomes the charismatic leader of his own religious movement called ‘The Cause’. He enlists the help of Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), a drifter who becomes Dodd’s right-hand man.
The film is said to have Scientology overtones, with particular similarities to the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
The flick was shot using the large 65mm format, the same used by Christopher Nolan on Inception, so expect to see some striking visuals. Originally The Master was set to open in October, but has since been moved up an entire month.
The film also stars Amy Adams, Laura Dern, and Jesse Plemons.
The Master opens September 14th, 2012.
