John Carter is the eagerly sci-fi / fantasy based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel John Carter of Mars, where a former Confederate soldier is inexplicably transported to Mars and finds himself in the middle of another war between the planet’s inhabitants.
The film has had plenty of detractors, with the obvious comparisons to Avatar – though not as cool or as gung-ho – and making the film has been plenty expensive for Disney with many execs at the nail biting stage as the film prepares to set sail.
That said the film is from Wall-E director Andrew Stanton and these Pixar chaps know how to tell a story – early reviews from critics have also been positive.
If you’re still undecided, Disney has posted a ten minute scene which takes place prior to the planetry travel and introduces us to the main character of John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) with the story being seen through the eyes of a young Edgar Rice Burroughs (Daryl Sabara).
The film also stars Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Polly Walker, Thomas Haden Church, and Willem Dafoe.
John Carter opens in IMAX and 3D on March 9th.
