Steven Soderbergh’s foray into the action/ fighting genre could be a lot of fun. While the director shoots most – if not all of the action himself – it’s hard to say if he captures the same visceral energy that Paul Greengrass achieved with his Bourne action flicks. Soderbergh uses the new Red digital cameras and while director Peter Jackson uses the same technology to impressive results, Soderbergh’s images look more natural – though not as glossy. Nonetheless the director has a keen eye for performance and narrative, and knows how to craft a story – so his first ‘full on action flick’ could be worth checking out.
You can judge for yourself by watching an extended scene that shows newcomer and MMA fighter Gina Carano with Channing Tatum, having something of a disagreement in a diner.
Here’s the synopsis :
Mallory Kane (Carano) is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.
Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious—and dangerous—trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary.
