For the last few months there’s been plenty of talk surrounding Quentin Tarantino‘s latest project that’s looking to pay homage to his love of the spaghetti western genre. The new flick entitled Django Unchained has ties to the 1966 Italian western flick ‘Django’ which starred Franco Nero who is also attached to the project. The 60’s spaghetti Western was directed by Sergio Corbucci and has influenced many films and TV shows over the years from ‘Star Wars’ (Jango Fett), ‘Trigun’, ‘Sukiyaki Western Django’ (directed by Takashi Miike, co-starring Quentin Tarantino), and Johnny Depp‘s recent animated flick ‘Rango’.

Variety reports that Will Smith has been offered the lead role which has been honed with the talented actor in mind. Django is a freed slave who under the tutelage of a german bounty hunter,  becomes one himself and soon goes on a mission to liberate his wife from the clutches of an evil plantation owner.

Christoph Waltz who won the Oscar for his intense performance in ‘Inglorious Basterds’ is on board to play the German Bounty Hunter and Samuel L. Jackson is circling the part of Stephen, the house slave to the bad guy, Monsieur Calvin Candie. His character is an expert manipulator who will face off with Django.

Tarantino is aiming to start production later this year in the South, possibly in Louisiana and Universal is expected to finance the project after ‘Inglorious Basterds’ earned $193 million dollars at the international box office.
