Eric Stoltz featured in Back to the Future Blu-ray

Fans of the Back to the Future series may know that Michael J Fox wasn’t the original choice for the film and that his part was the result of recasting. It’s hard to imagine anyone else as Marty McFly and if he hadn’t got the part it would’ve been a much different movie.

Riding the wave of success on his TV sitcom Family Ties which showcased his remarkable comic timing, he became the obvious choice to take over the role and as an ambitious young actor he would have to balance the sitcom and the film, working tirelessly on both projects.

His performance as Marty McFly is an endearing one that resonates today, however he was brought in to replace the original actor, Eric Stoltz. It turned out that the laughs that director Robert Zemeckis had envisaged just weren’t there in Stoltz’s performance and after 5 weeks of shooting,  production was shut down whilst the director convinced the studios the part needed to be re-cast and a significant portion of the film re-shot.

The new Blu-ray doesn’t include scene outtakes  for obvious professionalism, but includes a new documentary which takes a look at the production dilemma and the reasons why the changes came about.

You can see a preview of that doco here.

Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy on Blu-ray will be available October 26th.
