The new show Lonestar which was well received by critics with some good performances by James Wolk and Jon Voight seems to have struck a nerve, failing to connect with audiences and becoming the first major causality of the TV season.
Set against the backdrop of a Dallas-esque oil-industry , the pilot episode directed by Marc Webb of the new Spider-man movie – ouch! – was ultimately the story of a diabolical sociopath with very few redeeming qualities and from the clingy women in his life to the co-workers beguiled by his conman charms and his overreaching father (who for some reason looked the same in a flashback from 2 decades past), this show was a miscalculation on all counts. Whilst the central character was intriguingly complex, the tone implied that he was about to go on path of redemption, though at the very end of the first episode he suddenly commits bigamy – confirming the need for some serious therapy or a course of medication.
Somewhat ironic is the replacement for it’s time-slot next week, Fox have now decided to move it’s hit Lie to Me forward a month with third season premiere originally scheduled for November 10th, now slotted in for October 4th. Perhaps if Lonestar’s Robert Allen had met Dr Lightman sooner then the pain of what was the premiere episode could have been bypassed altogether – the first ep attracted 4.1 million viewers with the second getting only 3.7 million, with most viewers generally disliking the new show altogether. Fox has acted swiftly and pulled the plug to spare viewers the pain of allowing it to proceed any further, R.I.P Lonestar…
