The Spider-man reboot is getting ready to commence shooting this December with director Marc Webb helming the latest take on the webslinger. His credits are not that impressive with his recent directorial effort – TV ‘s Lonestar bombing abysmally and show his inexperience could be an issue with this genre flick. With production revving up, some powerhouse actors are being eyed to bring some well needed credibility to this new version. Whilst the casting of Spider-man went to Andrew Garfield earlier this year, the other pivotal parts are still yet to be confirmed. Now with production looming, names are coming to the forefront for the roles of Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy and the rumored villain said to be the revived Venom.
The actress on top of the list to play Mary Jane Watson and awaiting official confirmation is Emma Stone, whose current flick Easy A has already generated $35 million in grosses and proved that she has enough box-office clout to open a movie respectably on name alone.
The 21 yr old has built an impressive resume over the years appearing in the hits Superbad and the recent Zombieland opposite Jesse Eisenberg from this week’s box-office champ, The Social Network. Her comedic range and diversity are apparent in her performances and her red locks make her a shoe-in for the part of Mary Jane with the studios needing an actress who has a following with younger audiences – so she’s the likely contender. Her character though is not meant to be the featured love interest this time around, instead the story will switch to the other lady in Peter Parker‘s life, Gwen Stacy.
Whilst the rumor mill was circulating that Hilary Duff was in possible contention for the role and said to have been reading the script just last month, it seems those rumors have been dashed. The actress now vying for the role is the stunning 24 yr old Glee star Dianna Agron, who reportedly auditioned just a few days back. Whilst her commitment to the songster show might be an issue scheduling wise, it’s likely something can be worked out if ‘the powers that be’ want her in the movie. Gwen Stacy was played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Spidey 3 with the character pursing a modeling career, so if this is carried across in the reboot then her smoldering looks will surely be right for the role.
As for Spideys nemesis, the rumors are that studios are eying the talented Philip Seymour Hoffman to bring some villainous charisma to the movie. Whilst many have thought he’s the contender for the Venom character played by Topher Grace in the third flick, comic-book movie reports his role will likely be the father figure playing Eddie Brock, Sr. whose son becomes the villainous Venom.
Until official announcements are made, let the speculations begin.
