Andy Whitfield passed away over the weekend due to complications from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, he was 39 years old. Fans of the hit show SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND, were drawn to his incredible presence as the titular character, and many had hoped that he might return at some point. When the part was recast, there was plenty of reluctance to accept the change and we can only wait and see how the show transitions.
Manager Sam Maydew confirmed the actor died over the weekend. Whitfield’s wife, Vashti, called her husband a “beautiful young warrior” who died on a “sunny Sydney morning” in the “arms of his loving wife”.
The Welsh born actor worked as an engineer before training as an actor and soon rose to fame on Aussie TV shows before being cast in what became the mega-hit Spartacus. He will be sorely missed, our condolences go out to his wife and family.
Starz president Chris Albrecht echoed the sentiment felt by many with this statement:
We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield. We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.
