Something that almost never happens in TV except for the likes of Family Guy, is for a show to survive cancellation twice, but that’s what happened to the comedy Breaking In, starring Bret Harrison, Christian Slater, Odette Annable, Alphonso McAuley plus former Lex Luthor, Michael Rosenbaum. From creators Adam F. Goldberg and Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) the series aired only seven episodes and despite good ratings, was cancelled back in May.
The workplace comedy set at a digital security firm features a zany crew led by the somewhat disturbed character ‘Oz’ played by Christian Slater. With plenty of hi-jinks during each security ‘mission’ and throwaway gags to add to it’s charm – fans of Star Wars and other sci-fi flicks will appreciate the many references.
Co-produced by Sony TV and Happy Madison, Fox ordered the show to pilot during the 2009-10 season and was then the highest testing pilot – however the network still passed on the show but held on to the cast. Fox ordered 2 additional scripts and in November gave the show a seven-episode mid-season order to air after American Idol. When the show was cancelled before finishing it’s intital run the cast options were extended once more, with the network shouldering some of the cost with Sony TV.
The new deal with series creator Goldberg gives a pilot development deal for a semi-autobiographical 80′s family-based comedy – though he’ll have to put that on the back burner with production to resume on the resurrected comedy.
Fox has given an order for a 13-episode new season which could air late this year or early 2012.
