Heres’ the new promo for the upcoming series on the TNT network which looks like it could have all the right ingredients; aliens, displaced citizens and some impressive visuals. Its from executive producer Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Television with the pilot episode written by Robert Rodat of Saving Private Ryan fame.

Falling Skies stars Noah Whyle playing Tom Mason, a former college professor who soon becomes the leader of a group of soldiers and civilians fighting against the alien invaders. Moon Bloodgood from Terminator Salvation co-stars as Anne Glass, a therapist who helps the children cope with the traumatic turn of events with Jessy Schram recently seen in Unstoppable playing the feisty rebel Karen.  Seychelle Gabriel of The Last Airbender plays an orphaned teenager who helps run the group’s commissary, Drew Roy, Connor Jessup and Maxim Knight play the Mason family sons. Will Patton will have a recurring role as a fierce resistance fighter along with veteran actor Dale Dye.

It seems to have all the appeal of the alien invasion blockbusters but with an ongoing weekly story depicting the struggle of the human race against an occupying alien force. Ironically Spielberg‘s early movies depicted aliens as possibly friendly such as with E.T and Close Encounters, though the trend these days seems to lean towards the more commercial alien invasion premise.

What distinguishes this new show is the producers and TNT have teamed up with Dark Horse Comics (300, Sin City) to produce a web comic series written by Paul Tobin and illustrated by Juan Ferreyra. There will be new chapters released online every two weeks that will serve to bridge the gap between the 12-page Falling Skies comic released at New York Comic Con. It looks to be a clever bit of marketing but also ensures that it will have a lot of creative input that could make this one of the break-out hits of 2011.
