Hannibal Lecter To Feast on TV

Hannibal Lecter is making the move to TV with NBC picking up a deal to make a new 13 episode series. The deal is with recently formed Gaumont International Television who’s CEO Katie O’Connell used to be NBC’s head of drama. Martha De Laurentiis who produced the Hannibal Lecter sequels will executive produce along with ‘Pushing Daisies’ creator Bryan Fuller, who’s also prepping the script.

There’s plenty of interest in the Hannibal franchise and Fuller is said to be developing a script against a 13-episode commitment – which means if NBC likes what they read, the show goes straight into production. The network is said to have developed interest in the project when Fuller discussed it with the network’s new entertainment president Jennifer Salke.  The dark side of Hannibal apparently attracted Fuller to developing this as a series, though unless it airs on a cable channel it’s hard to know whether it will be afforded the gory luxuries which make Showtime’s ‘Dexter’ such a cult favorite.

While the ‘Hannibal Rising’ prequel flick had his younger counterpart beginning his reign of terror at the end of World War II – this TV version will need to be updated considerably for today’s audience. The other question is finding an actor who can come close to the menace that Anthony Hopkins brought to the role, and whether we will here the famous line uttered:

I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.
