The iconic TV show Dallas which ran from 1978 through to 1991 is being rebooted with series stars Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray and Larry Hagman set to return. Production on the pilot for Turner Network Television begins in a few months and was written by Cynthia Cidre (Mambo Kings & Cane). The new show will focus on J.R. and Bobby Ewing’s sons, who have now stepped in to fill their fathers’ personal and professional shoes. TNT-TBS programming chief Michael Wright has high expectations for the new show and believes Cynthia has offered a compelling and updated scenario to capture viewers attention. Speaking to Variety he said:
I don’t want to give away the plot, but she found something authentic to business and to Dallas that allows them to trade on the same dynamic of the super wealthy, ‘Dallas’ was always something of an ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ paradigm. If it wasn’t the rich and poor, it was attitude – entitlement versus a populist point of view. This covers all that.
During the 80s millions of viewers tuned in each week to watch the sexual exploits and the Ewings family power struggles. It dominated the airwaves for CBS running for thirteen seasons and in 2007 was voted Time Magazine’s “100 Best Shows of All-TIME”.
Larry Hagman who played the unscrupulous oil baron J.R. Ewing ultimately became the focus of Dallas with audiences finding him more intriguing than J.R.’s brother Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and Pam (Victoria Principal). Now EW is reporting that Larry Hagman is set to reprise the role that made him famous.
The 78 year old actor still makes appearances on behalf of Dallas, which syndicates in 60 countries today. Hagman told EW last September:
It’s like an annuity, really, I go out, they adore me, and then they pay you. What better job can you have?
With original cast members locked in, the next task will be to fill the roles of the sons and other Ewing family members.
