With Steve Carell departing NBC’s comedy The Office, producers are pulling out all the stops to make this season the most memorable. Will Ferrell has signed on to appear in four episodes and will play a branch manager who comes from the home office and as you would expect, he’s just as normal as Steve Carell’s Michael Scott character. It’s still being figured out when the episodes will air but one will be after Carell’s finale, to help ease the transition.
At this point it’s not known if Ferrel could be a ‘regular’ guest star next season playing a Dunder Mifflin/Sabre Scranton potential new boss. Though producers have expressed interest that they would like to see other other popular comics such as ‘Eastbound and Down’s Danny McBride or ‘The Flight of the Conchords’ Rhys Darby appear in recurring roles.
Steve Carell leaves in April and it’s still unknown whether any of the current employees including Darryl (Craig Robinson), Dwight (Rain Wilson), Andy (Ed Helms) or Kelly (Mindy Kaling) would be promoted to the new branch manager, or who joins the cast for season 8.
Executive producer Paul Lieberstein who plays HR executive Toby Flenderson, Michael Scott’s arch-nemesis, had this to say about Steve’s final season and Will’s guest spot:
We found Steve Carell when he was nothing but a movie star and we turned him into a television star. We are proud to continue The Office‘s tradition of discovering famous talent, and we hope that once America gets a good look at Will, they’ll see what we see: tremendous raw sexuality.
As for last nights appearance on ‘The Office’ of franchise mastermind Ricky Gervais, here’s the ‘chance’ encounter between Michael Scott and David Brent which looks somewhat unscripted, with the two actors showing off their improv skills. There was also a subtle hint to Steve Carell’s departure which summed up the scene quite well.
